Jewelers are interested. In 1974 Tiffany names it tsavorite by reference to a Kenyan park adjacent to the extraction zone. The operation is not always politically easy. In 2009 the discoverer of the vein is massacred.
On October 15 in New York, Heritage sells one of the largest specimens of tsavorite, lot 57187.
This yellowish green gemstone extracted in 2003 was cut as a faceted oval in Bangkok to a final weight of 65.72 carats. Its size is 23 x 20 x 17 mm.
It is estimated that the tsavorite is 200 times rarer than emerald. There is no history at auction of a tsavorite of such a size. It is estimated $ 1M with a starting bid of $ 500K at no reserve.
