Ford is engaged in a similar analysis : the cooperation between Chapman and Ford generates three successive models tailored for Indy based on the Lotus 25 of the Formula 1 : Lotus 29 in 1963, Lotus 34 in 1964 and Lotus 38 in 1965.
The factory drivers of Lotus are the best : Gurney, Jim Clark, A.J. Foyt, and their pole positions are numerous in the USAC competitions. The voluntarily unbalanced suspension to approach the left turns of the American ovals is however a weak point and it was not until 1965 that Clark won at Indy with a Lotus 38. Also the fuel circuit surrounding the cockpit indeed frightened the drivers.
Three Lotus 34 were built. 34/2 has a good history of pole positions, mostly with Foyt who modified it for the 1965 season. Foyt withdrew it after the 1966 season and kept it in his garage until 1992. It was recently restored. It is estimated $ 1.8M for sale by Bonhams at Quail Lodge - Carmel on August 18, lot 82.
