Face by GROTJAHN
Intro
Mark Grotjahn began with abstract paintings designed from two vanishing points spread over a central vertical. The radiating lines define triangles that are filled in several monochrome shades of a basic color. That Butterflies series offers the illusion of these insects with open wings.
His next series is the Faces, started around 2007. Vanishing points are now multiple. The radiant graphics are now flexible lines that get entangled in a thick impasto of many colors.
The figurative elements brought by scrapes and cuts in the supporting cardboard simulate a mouth, a nose and several eyes in a changing quantity before disappearing within the impasto. Such canceling of early elements within an abstraction follows Pollock, Johns, Klein and Richter and are contemporary to Bradford and Cecily Brown.
The colors are carefully chosen so that none of them is dominant. As for Rothko or Gaitonde, the artworks are glossy and their photographic reproductions are dull.

2010 Pumpkin by Yayoi Kusama
2019 SOLD for HK$ 54M by Sotheby's
The pumpkin became a major element of Yayoi Kusama's hallucinations in her childhood. Visiting a harvesting ground with her grandfather, she noticed a specimen on the size of a human head. The vegetable then began to speak to her friendly, counterbalancing the nasty flowers and dogs of her visions. The pumpkin provides a feeling of abundance and joy, enabling to cancel her desire of self obliteration.
She featured it repetitively from the 1990s as a support to reach a peaceful infinity. The vegetable painted in its natural golden orange on canvases and sculptures appealed to the public. They were decorated with tight patterns of her signature polka dots. Symmetrical and bulbous in a sharp contrast, it provides an illusion of tridimensionality. Its sunny color provides optimism.
A Pumpkin painted in 1993 in landscape format was sold for $ 4.9M by Christie's on May 15, 2023, lot 8 B. This early example, acrylic on canvas 73 x 91 cm, is of small size but already has the features of the later examples. In the style of the Op art, the polka dots are displayed in rows of decreasing sizes on each side of the vertical ribs of the pumpkin. The background is an infinite pattern knotted like a fishing net in yellow lines over ebony black.
An acrylic on canvas 112 x 146 cm painted in 1995 was sold for HK $ 56M by Phillips on March 30, 2023, lot 10.

2010 Pagani Zonda R
2023 SOLD for $ 5.3M by RM Sotheby's
The mastery of engineering allows smaller car brands to reach the top level, provided that they apply a great care to all details in a limited production. Pagani and Koenigsegg are the best examples. The Pagani brand was created in 1992 by a former collaborator of Lamborghini who is a specialist in carbon fibers.
The Pagani Zonda was created in 1999 and the Huayra coupe replaced it in 2012. Each of these models has evolved over time through a practice of continuous improvement of the composite materials and of weight balancing. Packages were available for upgrading to more recent standard the previously delivered cars.
The Zonda R is a coupe for track only, made from 2009 to 2011 with a 6 litre 740 hp Mercedes-Benz V 12 racing engine.

2010 This Land so rich in Beauty by Zeng Fanzhi
2021 SOLD for HK$ 40M by Christie's
Zeng Fanzhi executed in 2006 a series of about 15 paintings titled This Land so rich in Beauty. The sceneries are common hills and shrubs half hidden behind a pattern of leafless winter branches.
The No. 1 confirms the mockery. A standing proud Mao is well centered before that desolated scenery while his shadow is broken in the frost lake of the foreground, demonstrating the nonsense of the Chairman's Ode to Snow. This oil on canvas 215 x 330 cm was sold for HK $ 9.9M by Sotheby's on April 5, 2013, lot 904.
The mocked Mao had introduced the series. Without him, the No. 2 was sold for HK $ 7.9M on September 30, 2017, lot 1049. The chaos is further increased by the absence of the white foreground in the No. 6, a diptych 5 m long overall sold for HK $ 22.5M by Sotheby's on April 5, 2014, lot 149. Going still closer to a dull abstraction, the No. 7 was sold for HK $ 6.6M by Sotheby's on October 4, 2010, lot 714.
The series was completed in 2010 with two triptychs of elements 250 x 350 cm, 250 x 1050 cm each overall. The No. 1 was sold for HK $ 15.5M by Christie's on November 30, 2022, lot 42. The No. 2 was sold for HK $ 40M from a lower estimate of HK $ 10M by Christie's on December 1, 2021, lot 15.
