masterpiece
1894 Madonna
Munch Museum, Oslo
The two masterpieces in the imaging of Edvard Munch, The Scream and Madonna, were conceived in the same year, 1893. Anxiety and fertility express the great question of life and it is tempting to view them as a pair.
Madonna is a pretty woman whose model Dagny Juel was admired by the artist. She is nude and standing, displayed down to the hips. The head is tilted back and the closed eyes are waiting for pleasure. The red lips express pain according to the explanation provided by the artist and bring this ambiguous idol close to the Vampyr, another of the favorite themes of Munch at the same time. The sinister background marks the uncertainty of the future.
Munch designed for his first Madonna the red blood frame on which sperms are slipping and which is broken at the bottom left to display the fetus, a symbol of death since it is lethal outside a woman's body. This unique frame was not kept.
The painting is preceding the lithograph in black and white, which is the subject of various color trials by the artist for choosing the best balance for his future color lithographs.
The image of the 1894 version is shared by Wikimedia.

1894 Vampire
2008 SOLD for $ 38M by Sotheby's
Munch knew to mingle love and death as exampled by his Madonna. He was an illustrator concerned about the disclosure of his work, who made his oils on canvas in a small number of examples and added lithographic issues with a virtually identical drawing. As a result, this female "vampire", with her flame-color long hair, kissing on the neck of her lover, is an image that the auction news bring us often.
The Vampire was painted in four copies in 1893-1894. The only oil on canvas in private handshad been loaned during ten years to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It was sold for $ 38M by Sotheby's on November 3, 2008. The image is shared by Wikimedia.

1893-1894 Sunrise at Asgardstrand
2021 SOLD for $ 5.3M by Sotheby's
Endeavoring to express the soul, Edvard Munch departed from pictorial reality in the attitude of the characters but also in the landscapes.
From 1889 he enjoyed spending summer and holidays at Åsgårdstrand, a resort south of Christiania.
A Sunrise at Åsgårdstrand features the sun just over the horizon, creating in the sea an unrealistic bright reflection that somehow anticipates the flashes of Clyfford Still and the shearing zips of Barnett Newman. This beam is repeated but weakened in the upper window of the house, creating in this uninhabited scene an emotional link between celestial and human.
This oil on canvas 65 x 89 cm painted in 1893-1894 was sold for $ 5.3M from a lower estimate of $ 2M by Sotheby's on November 17, 2021, lot 16. The image is shared by Wikimedia.

The elliptic tabletop supports a dish with six apples in three rows, a porcelain cup on its saucer, a rectangular mirror and two smaller apples one of which is half out of field. Two of the big apples look unbalanced at the rim of the dish. A chimney, a medallion and a wind instrument are inserted in the back wall.

1894 Berthe Morisot and her Daughter Julie Manet by Renoir
2022 SOLD for $ 24.4M by Christie's
Berthe Morisot maintained in her home closed social links with the Impressionist artists and the avant-garde poets. She had married in 1874 Eugène, the younger brother of Edouard Manet. Their daughter Julie was born in 1878.
In the late 1880s she developed a mutual artistic influence with Pierre-Auguste Renoir who made in 1887 a portrait of the child Julie Manet with a round face. Renoir took Julie again as a sitter in 1894. After a few sessions, he convinced Berthe to sit also for an intimate portrait with her beloved daughter.
The double portrait, oil on canvas 81 x 66 cm painted in April 1894 in Renoir's studio, was sold by Christie's for $ 8.8M on May 8, 2000, lot 27 and for $ 24.4M on May 12, 2022, lot 31C. The image is shared by Wikimedia.
The gray haired widowed mother in a black mourning dress is relaxing in a chair. She looks tired although her final illness will only happen a few months later. The lovely dark haired teenager is standing behind her with a pensive smile and a large white hat. The highly realistic face of Julie may be compared with photos of her in that period.
As requested in Berthe's will, the kind and sincerely emotive Renoir became Julie's unofficial guardian after her death. Julie married in 1900 Ernest Rouart whose family owned the double portrait until the 2000 auction.

1894 MONET

Les Demoiselles de Giverny by Monet
2012 SOLD for $ 9.6M by Christie's
The meulettes are temporary stacks prepared to shelter the wheat grains against inclement weather while the large size meules are constructed for the winter storage. Near Monet's home in Giverny, these ephemeral elements of the country scape stand like a team of schoolgirls kindly aligned at the other end of the field just before the wood.
Les Demoiselles de Giverny, oil on canvas 65 x 100 cm from a series of three, was sold for $ 9.6M by Christie's on May 1, 2012, lot 11. The image is shared by Wikimedia.
This specific view displays the blending of subtle colors of the wheat field in the glooming light of early morning. The whole foreground is freed from graphic details. The background and horizon are left in a foggy blur to provide a shimmering impression of these Demoiselles.

W1387 Eglise de Vernon, soleil
2014 SOLD for $ 7.8M by Sotheby's
In 1883 just after he moved to Giverny, the church of Vernon beyond the scene river was the theme of one of Monet's first excursions. Using his bateau atelier from an island; his three views taken from three viewpoints do not constitute a unified series in the sense of the 1890s, after les Meules.
He returned to that scenery in 1894 in the beginning of summer for a series of six oil on canvas 65 x 92 cm from a single viewpoint and angle, in conditions that vary from hazy sun to dense fog, creating an evocative atmosphere that immerses the scene and renders all the forms as vaporous specters.
Eglise de Vernon, soleil was sold by Sotheby's for $ 7.8M on November 4, 2014, lot 30 and for $ 7.1M on May 14, 2025, lot 29. The view is catching the moment when hot sun rays dissolve the enveloping morning mist. The reflection of the church in the river is beautiful.

1894 Fallen Caryatid by Rodin
2019 SOLD for $ 7.6M by Sotheby's
The Fallen Caryatid crushed under her stone was a great subject for representing a tormented woman in Hell. She is seated with arms entwined and head cradled on a shoulder. The whole is symbolizing a moral pressure.
Her place in Rodin's Porte de l'Enfer is in the upper left.
A Caryatid carved in stone exhibited in 1883 was the very first element from the Gate to have been prepared as an autonomous work. This sculpture is lost.
On request from a collector, a 63 cm high one-third increased replica was executed by Rodin in limestone in 1894. The artist managed a spectacular contrast between the finely carved fallen architecture and the poorly detailed finish of the suffering woman. It was sold for $ 7.6M from a lower estimate of $ 4M by Sotheby's on November 12, 2019, lot 7.

1894 Pommiers à Eragny by Pissarro
2012 SOLD for £ 2.95M by Christie's
Established since 1884 at Eragny, not far upstream on the Epte from Giverny, Camille Pissarro was specializing in rural themes in his immediate vicinity : the village, the river, the orchards, the peasants.
Close to nature, he observes the beautiful colors that vary according to season, time and sky. Pommiers à Eragny was painted in 1894 from the barn recently converted as his studio with a financial help from Monet. Apple trees and poplars bring an exquisite georgic rhythm. The rich impasto of the foreground blurs a peasant woman in the meadow.
This oil on canvas 60 x 74 cm was sold for £ 2.95M from a lower estimate of £ 900K by Christie's on February 7, 2012, lot 11, from the deceased estate of Liz Taylor.
